I assume you want to be able to double-click on the icon to open the file.
In Word - Insert>Object>Create from File>Display as icon.
Select Link to file if you want to reflect any changes in the original file,
or deselect it to embed the file (eg for distribution)

You can insert a link to a file as an icon, and there are free utilities that
let you get icons in DLL files for use as images in documents. Try searching
for icons and look to see what utilities are available.
