Can I change how my calendar reminders are displayed in 2003?

In the Outlook 2003 version, if you are working on something else the
calendar reminders don't 'pop up' on your screen instead my Outlook bar on
the bottom turns a different color. Is there a way to change this so I will
actually see the reminder?
