I'd like to create or modify a footer style, but cannot select boxes, fills, shadings, etc.

Is there a way to create a new document element?

Thanks for your help.

P. S. I use Word 08 on two Macs: one Intel, the other, PowerPC.

I'm afraid not - but if you clarify what it is that you'd like to accomplish
there may be a suitable alternative.

Hi Greg:

You "can" add document elements, but it's very laborious on the Mac.

Word 2008 does not have the Developer Tab functionality, so it's really
difficult to add elements. You have to edit the Document Elements template
in /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Document Elements/Document
Elements.dotx

Unless you have an XML Editor, the easiest way is to find a copy of PC Word
2007. Word 2008 can't do it.

However, you CAN create AutoText entries, which are almost the same thing.
It's just that AutoText entries are filed under the name of the paragraph
style used in them, rather than appearing on the Document Elements bar.

Do not confuse the term "style" as used in the Document Parts and the term
"style" as used elsewhere in Word. A Document Part is simply an object that
has theme formatting applied.

A Style is a named collection of formatting (no text or actual object, just
the formatting).

Insert the footer closest to the one you want. Then re-format it to have
the colours and styles you want. Then select the whole thing, and save it
as an AutoText.

AutoText is described in the Help.

Hope this helps

Bob: Thanks. All I really want to do is change the color of a footer's shading, and the color of the text in that shaded area from white to black.

I understand that I can do that by creating a new footer without using document elements. My problem is that I need this footer to appear in multiple documents on an ongoing basis.

I also realize that I can create a blank document with the footer in it and use it as a template, which is likely the thing I'll do. I was just hoping that 2008 allowed easy creation of new doc elements such as footers.

John: I'm a geek, through and through, but my current job doesn't allow time for the routine your specify. I guess I'm getting lazy. I used to relish being able to get a program or OS to do something that it's not "supposed" to do, but now I'm less about peering under the hood and more about "just make it work, please." Maybe I'm not as geeky as I think . . . .

Thanks to both of you. You've helped me out of quite a few situations, and I'm grateful for your knowledge and advice.

Hi Greg:

Yeah, that's why I suggested that you use an AutoText. They only take about
three seconds to create :)

Just get a footer the way you want it, and save it as an AutoText.

It is saved in your Normal template and available to any document you
create.

Cheers
