Can I create a new table style based on a table in a document?

I have tried to create a new table style, modifying an existing autoformat
style to my specifications, but it will not accept my font size changes. I
don't WANT 12 point font in my tables, but every time I try to change font
size to 10, the program fails to accept the new number. The font size
drop-down is available, but apparently not working. I need to either A)
Solve the sizing problem or B) Find a different way to create a table style.
(Need something robust and "idiot-proof" to roll-out to a user set with
varying skills.)

Have you selected the whole table when changing the point size? At the top
left above the table there is a small square with a four-pointed arrow inside
it. Click on this and it will select the whole table, then change your point
size. Does this work?

Which font are you trying to use this with? Table styles don't seem to accept
Arial 10...

Gee....that's not very useful....I use Ariel 10 point for my tables.

"Knock knock knock....Hellooooo Microsoft? Have you noticed how LARGE
12-point Ariel type is? I just want to get information across in my tables,
not beat my readers over the head with it!!! How about fixing the glitch in
Word that prevents me from setting up a table autoformat with 10-point
Ariel...."

Yeah, I've reported it across two sets of beta, and it never has gotten fixed.
I suspect it's something so deep down that changing it breaks a lot of other
things... How about Arial 10.5 or 9.5? Or Verdana instead of Arial?

Is this part of the same bug that doesn't allow you to set the font in a
table style if Normal has been changed from 12-pt TNR? (Or whatever it is--I
never can seem to remember what the exact bug is since I don't even attempt
to use table styles.)

No, at least it's not directly related. You literally cannot choose "10" from
the font list, in the "Style" dialog box, when Arial is selected.

My experience with Word 2003 is that I can select Arial 10 but it doesn't
stay selected - the box is empty a moment later.

I could select it for the header row only, and the number stayed in the box,
but it had no effect.

I'm glad to know it is Microsoft bug and not a MyPersonalBrain bug

FWIW I have experienced the same issue with Word Mac 2004. I had changed the
Normal font to Garamond 12. Try as I might, I was unable to create a table
style using Myriad Web 10 as the table font. It always ended up being
Garamond 12. In the style creation dialog, a 10-pt font size wasn't even on
offer. The only solution that worked was to re-designate TNR as the Normal
font and then PRESTO! everything worked. I was able to create a table style
based on Myriad Web 10-pt as the font. If you still want to use a font other
than TNR you can then do as I did, and make Garamond the font for Body Text.
PS I'm not an "expert" user but have long hours of frustrated experience
trying - often unsuccessfully - to tame Word to make it do what I want. It's
not always obvious.

The workaround is this: In W2002 and 2003 and presumably W2004, do not set
any font properties in the table style. Use paragraph styles to format
table text instead.
