Can I download Microsoft Office for Windows 98?

I had to re-boot my computer and do not have the disk to re-load Microsoft
Office. I had a copy under the licensing agreement with the company I worked
for. I am now retired.

Or can I purchase Office on line for Windows 98?

There is no such thing as "Office for Windows 98" - no version of Office has
ever been linked to any version of Windows, nor is Office available to
download. If you only have Windows 98 then your only option is Office XP,
which has now been discontinued, but you'll probably still be able to find
it - I know that Amazon still has copies.

Ron Box,
Since you have Windows 98 you'll need to purchase Office XP or earlier. An
online retailer such as Amazon may have some copies of XP left in stock. The
latest version, Office 2003 requires Windows 2000 SP3 or Windows XP to run.
See the system requirements here:

You could also check ebay or a related site for "used" copies of Office
editions, but buyer be aware... as the saying goes.

In microsoft.public.office.misc, "Miss Perspicacia Tick"
no version of Office has ever been linked to any version of Windows,

Hi Sarah.

Would you consider "Microsoft Office for Windows 95" an exception to
that?

I assume she took it as I intended. She has always been polite and
helpful to me and I meant no less in my response, though some have
mistaken my brevity for something other than that.

Who's she? The cat's mother? And no, I wouldn't - I'd consider it misleading
labelling on MS's part.

And what's this 'ew', Mrs P...?

That was a nice try but "Ew" like a bad pun. ;-)

And you shouldn't get me started on the way MS has named their products. I
can't tell you how often I've had to try to clear up the "Win XP is not the
same thing as Office XP". Or "Home Publishing is not the same thing as
Publisher". ARGH!

I'm leaving - gonna go visit Mom. She's going to help me get my newsletters
labeled and stamped. (Mom's are great, no matter how old you are!)
