One of my co-workers needs to quickly send a email with a couple of slides
from an extremely large PowerPoint presentation through MS Outlook. Can she
do this from a PowerPoint presentation or must the slides always to within a
presentation?

1) copy the presentation to another file
2) open the file in powerpoint
3) delete the other slides
4) save the file
5) email it

Another way to do it:
- Open a blank presentation
- INSERT >> SLIDES FROM FILES >> (browse) >> click KEEP SOURCE FORMATTING >>
(pick the slides yout want)

A tiny warning!

Taj's method works great if you do it as he says - however I have many folk
coming to me saying "I accidently saved over my original, how do I get it
back??" Ans - "You dont!"

The insert slides from files way is a lot safer IMHO and often quicker
