Can I install office 2007 and 2003 on same PC

I have purchased the office home and student 2007 and really don't like it -
I have thought I would like to keep it just to try and suss out. I have also
now installed a shop bought office 2003 - can I use a default so that office
2003 will be the first programme used or should I just uninstall 2007.

You should first uninstall both versions of Office in the order that they
were installed reboot the computer between each uninstall and before you
install Office 2003 first and fully update it before you install Office 2007
and fully update that version. Microsoft has this KB article to assist you
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928091/en-us

If you have any problems with the reinstall you may have to use the
installation cleanup methods in the next to KB articles. Read them fully
before proceeding.

2007 install cleanup http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/

Pre 2007 installer cleanup http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

For using one version over the other, I recommend creating shortcuts from
the actual program executable files stored on the computer (Office 11 & 12
folders) That way when you double click on an icon on the desktop you know
which version will open. I have one laptop that I use for teaching Office
that has Office versions 4.3 (a Win 3.1 program suite), 97, 2000, 2002 (XP),
2003 & 2007 all installed and functional on an XP OS. Remember that you can
only have one version of Outlook installed at a time and since H & S doesn't
have Outlook you should not have any issue with that.

Hope this helps, let us know what your final outcome is.

You can't specifiy which version you want to open a document. If you are
determined not to use the 2007 version, uninstall both 2003 and 2007,
reboot, reinstall 2003.

You can specify which version will open a document. It's just a little
tricky.

Once you've reinstalled both versions per the other posts, open Windows
Explorer (I'm speaking from a Win XP perspective) and go to Tools > Folder
Options. Select the File Types tab and sort the types list by extension.
Scroll down the list to find the Office extensions (doc, xls, etc.).
Highlight each extension and select the Change button. Find the application
you want to open the file, highlight it and select OK. If the desired
version is not in the list, you'll have to select the Browse button and find
the exe for the application. Make sure that the Always Set ... box is
checked before selecting OK.

No it's not - right-click on the file and choose "Open With". Check the box
at the bottom "Always open this type of file with..." (or words to that
effect!)

I'm having the same need as JoAnn, but opposite direction. I have both 2003
and 2007 installed, but want 2007 to open as the default for Excel and
Powerpoint, but 2003 for Word. I tried both BrianB's and Gordon's
suggestions, but the icon remains as the 2003 version. Any other ideas?

I didn't realize you couldn't see the previous posts that I replied to. Here
were the suggestions I already tried. Note that I did not reinstall either
version, but they were loaded in proper order (2003, all updates, then 2007).

BRIANB: You can specify which version will open a document. It's just a
little
tricky. Once you've reinstalled both versions per the other posts, open

GORDON: right-click on the file and choose "Open With". Check the box
