Can I make a task inactive?

Is it possible to mark a task as inactive, or otherwise make it so that
Project will overlook a task?

I am setting up Project for a construction company that sells custom homes
and builds spec homes. On a custom home, a contract is signed as an initial
task. On a spec home, the contract isn't signed until the house is sold,
which happens during or after construction. Contract signing is part of a
summary task (Phase I of VII) that has to be completed before the next
summary task can begin. I would simply mark this as completed, but they need
to be able to see at what point the contract is actually signed. I can set
this outside of its summary task, but the goal is to have ALL tasks assigned
to specific phases. Any advice on this problem would be appreciated!

If your work happens in set phases that follow one after the other,
then the signing of the contract should be moved to the phase during
which it occurs. A project plan is always a living document until the
project is complete, so I don't see any problem with moving a task to
the point at which it actually occurs in the process. Leaving it in a
phase in which it doesn't happen is artificial.
