can I purchase oem software

I'm just wondering if one would be allowed to purchase authentic OEM software
from a vendor to install it on a recently purchased computer (the software we
want did not come pre-installed on the computer unfortunately).

Some places offer OEM software but you still have to purchase hardware -
that's what makes it OEM.

Do yourself a favor, buy a retail version that way you can install it on any
system instead of being lied into a particular piece of hardware.

I don't understand why I wouldn't want to buy the OEM version. If it is
hundreds of dollars cheaper, I could buy a cheap hard drive or some other
computer component, get the OEM version of the software, and still be saving
money (and I'd have a hard drive too). I'm just wondering if it is
technically allowed. Seems pretty silly to buy the retail version if all you
get is a manual, some technical support, some pretty packaging, and a two
computer loading license (which in my case is useless I think).
Also, what if they sell the product without any hardware? Is that not
allowed?

Sales people do all sorts of thing that may be technically in breech of the
licence.
Its really up to you, but don't complain if at a later date you are unable
to register on a new PC

Exactly. I have full retail software now instead of OEM. Knowing that
computers will be replaced by others, full versions are more economic.
