Can I re-protect a document with forms without losing data already entered?

I have a protected Word document with *many* form fields. It is not
yet totally automated, so there are some occasions where I must
unprotect the document to make changes to the document. However, the
problem is that when I re-protect the document, I lose all the data
that has already been entered in the form fields. Is there a way to
prevent the loss of this information?
