I have different access versions running on two computers. One
computer uses v97, the other uses v2002. I'd like to have both
versions on one computer. This way I can develop in either version
from my newer computer. (The older one has seen its days.) Is this
possible? If so, any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Yes, you can. There are a couple of points to take note of, though:
1. You must install them in separate folders on your hard disk.
2. It's generally thought best if you install them in ascending order by
version; so, Access 97, then Access 2002. On the other hand, I did it
the other way around, with only the "no license" problem described by
this KnowledgeBase article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;141373
That was easily remedied by following the steps outlined in the article.
3. Whichever version you ran most recently will want to register itself
as the default application for .mdb files and other Access-related file
extensions. With Access 97, you can disable this by locating the
"msaccess.srg" file in the Office folder where you installed Access 97,
renaming it (for backup purposes) and creating a new, empty file named
"msaccess.srg" in that folder. That will let you keep Access 2002 as
the default application for .mdb files. Note that, if you wanted to run
Access 2003 as well, you couldn't disable the self-registration for
Access 2002 the same way -- at least, I think that doesn't work.
