Can I sequentially number printed documents

I need to print up to 5000 Word documents, all identical except each is
individually and sequentially numbered on the printed copy. Is it possible to
do this with Office 2003 software?

Yes, create an Excel spreadsheet with the numbers 1-5000 and then use
that as your data source for a mailmerge to fill in the "number field".
