Can I Stop Word from Offsetting Pasted Pictures?

J

JonOfAllTrades

Good afternoon.
Is there a way to stop Word from offsetting each pasted picture? I
often paste a picture onto several pages, sometimes dozens, and I have to
adjust the layout of each one. This is obnoxious behaviour when the images
are aligned absolutely (left, right, or center, not offset in inches).
I suppose the best way would be to create a macro and hit the shortcut
key after each paste. Is there a setting buried somewhere?
Thank you.

What version of Word is this? If you choose Tools - Options - Edit, from the
menu, what is the default setting for "Insert/Paste Pictures As:"?

Word 2K. There is no such option in Options | Edit in my version.

Hi Jon,

Can you be a bit more specific on the steps you're following,
the layout/styles you're using and what you're seeing as 'offset'
in Word 2000 and also describe how you want it to appear?

I have a picture on divider pages on a document. It should appear on
most pages, but not all as occasionally a long table of such needs the extra
space - otherwise I'd put it in the footer and be done with it. I insert the
picture on page 1, position it horizontally centered by margins and
vertically 6" below the margin, just right.
Next, I copy the picture, move to the same insertion point on page 3,
and hit paste. It appears in approximately the same position, but 1/16" to
the right and below. So now it is 6.07" below the margin, and it is no
longer centered horizontally. Each subsequent paste is a further 1/16" off,
unless I correct each one. A trifle tedious in a 30-page document.
This behaviour makes sense if you are placing things at random, where
you'll position each copy by hand anyway. It could also make sense if you
pasted on the same page - otherwise your copy would be perfectly aligned with
the original and newbies might think nothing had happened.

Hmmm... if you click on Tools in the menu, then choose Options, are you
saying that there is no Edit tab?

If not, then I suspect registry/normal.dot corruption, a virus, or an evil
systems administrator at work.

But, please do check again, and if there is an Edit tab in the Options
dialog, see what the default is under "Insert/paste pictures as".

Thanks,

No, he's saying that the ability to select the insert/paste format is not
available in Word 2000; it was introduced in Word 2002.

*Smacks self on forehead*.

And, now that I see what he's talking about, I can confirm that I get the
identical absurd behavior in Word 2003. I can set the formatting in the
first picture, then copy it to the clipboard, and paste it into another
page. In each successive page, the picture is increasingly offset, rather
than replicating the formatting that SHOULD have been copied from the
original picture.

I can't fathom why Word does this. I'd be tempted to record a formatting
macro that fixes the formatting after I've pasted the picture.

I *can* see why Word does it. Indeed, the OP stated this (if a copy were
pasted on top of the original on the same page, you wouldn't know you had
two--and in fact I've seen this very thing happen in Excel charts so that my
husband ended up with dozens of superimposed text boxes and couldn't figure
out why he couldn't delete what he thought was a single one).

But the offset should be user-customizable. It is in other programs,
including (I think) Publisher.

Oh, I fathom the rationale perfectly--assuming you're pasting on top of a
another picture. However, I can't fathom why it offsets when the picture is
pasted onto a different page that DOESN'T contain any graphics. That, IMO is
Word being too smart for itself. It shouldn't offset unless you're pasting
over an existing graphic. Even then, it should prompt the user, as there
might be times when you'd actually want to do precisely that.

I'm confused: Word 2002 XP SP2+, etc.

I've been following this thread and trying to duplicate the
offsetting. I can't get it to happen. eg:
-- Cursor at column 8; insert picture.
-- Cursor back to column 8; insert picture of same size.
-- Cursor back to column 8; insert a bigger image.
Images are exactly one on top of one another. I see nothing to
imply there might be more than one image there. In fact, I've
"lost" pictures a few times that way, when Word decides it wants
to relocate an image for me, expecially if it won't fit where I
tried to put it.
Same in a table.

Images always insert at whatever column my cursor is sitting at
(as long as there is sufficient page space for it).

Did I miss something important in the discussion?
Or is that a settable feature somehow?

Curiousity's going to kill me someday.
PS Hmm, didn't check that in Normal View. I wonder...

We're not talking about inserting images. We're talking about pasting copied
images/AutoShapes.

Interesting... Word keeps you from shooting yourself in the foot only
sometimes. Why would it "protect" you only when pasting? Why not when
inserting, as well?

If you save the thing as an AutoText entry and insert it from there
you will avoid the bug.
