can i turn an image into a background ie; greyscale

i have a jpeg image an i want to know whether i can turn the image into a
greyscale image using this program

What program might that be? And as a background for what? If Picture
manager, Edit, Color, and drag the saturation setting to the left. I
would suggest you work with a copy and not the original.
