Can I unProtect a document?

J

Jeff

I am setting a document to protected in VB(-like) code, but not setting a
password. Like this: Call Document.Protect(2)

Is it possible to Unprotect this document? If so, how?

(Did I post this in the right forum?).
Thanks in advance for help.

Doh! (That'll learn me).
I looked in the menu system, I only need to unprotect one document (it's a
special case). Do you know how to unlock it from the menus?
Thanks,
-Jeff

When a document is unprotected the Tools menu will show an option "Protect
Document..."
When a document is protected the Tools menu will show an option "Unprotect
Document"

I think the wording may be slightly different in different versions of Word,
but it will be recognisable.

"Unprotect Document"

Nope. Not on the menu (*that* I did look for). But it's a very customized
version at my firm, so maybe it's been removed.

If the Forms toolbar is still available you'll find a "Protect form"
command on the toolbar.

Also, if you're using Word 2003 you'll find a Protect Document task
pane.

Out of curiosity, can I ask about the customizations? Were they
implemented for additional functionality, reorganization, or as an
attempt to prevent users from modifying the UI?

I really hate administrators who mess with things like this. Do you have
Tools > Customize available? If it's not on the menu it can be reached via
View > Toolbars > Customize - or right click any toolbar and Customize - or
by diuble clicking on any empty bit of toolbar area (including the top of
the task pane, but not the menu bar)

I found the Unprotect on the Forms toolbar (whew!). Thanks for the help Tony
and Beth.

Regarding some of your questions: Customize was not available in the Tools
menu or on View --> Toolbars. I am using Word 2000, maybe it's somewhere else
in this old version

The Word customizations are extensive. This client is a huge law firm and
customizations are there to prevent the lawyers from saving documents locally
-- they can only be saved to a document store -- give them tools like black
lining (but not the MS Word built in compare) and many other customizations
(you MS Word experts might not even recognize this thing I'm using). We can't
blame the administrators for this, these customizations are required by the
partners.

You should be able to double-click an empty area of a toolbar to open
the Customize dialog.

Thanks for the additional details. I doing a little research on how
the Office apps have been customized to meet various requirements. I'd
love to see some screen shots if you'd be willing to email them to me.
Perhaps one of the menu bar/toolbars and the Tools menu? Or if you
have other heavily customized menus those would be great too. If

Hi Beth.

I'm not really confortable disclosing such info. I'm merely a contractor
here and, although I can't imagine why they would consider this confidential,
I'm not really authorized to share it.

But I'm sure you would get a positive response if you contacted our PR
department. Here, using the same format for the email address, is Cleary

No problem, Jeff, I understand. :)

Thanks for the additional info - I suspect I would need to explain why
I'm interested and unfortunately that's not something I can disclose.
lolol

Thanks anyway!
