Can I upgrade Works 6.0 to Office 97

The box says "all versions of works" but I'm not sure when works 6.0 came
out. Is it the equivalent of 'works 97' I know that works 8.0 was the last
version that they used the sequentially numbered versions i.e. the next
version was Works 2000.

HUH?! Works 8.0 is the latest version of vanilla Works - vanilla Works
versions have *NEVER* used the year as the version - you're confusing it
with the Works /Suite/.

Ok, so to my original questions, can I upgrade works 6.0 to Office 97? I
guess what I'm asking is if works 6.0 came out after Office 97 or not and
whether Office will recognize works 6.0 as a QP.

Sorry - I apologise for my reply. You can actually work it out - it's only
two versions older than the latest (8) which corresponds to Office 2003 so,
theoretically, its counterpart is Office 2000. The qualifying product for
Office 97 would be version 4 or older. Please bear in mind that your upgrade
licence is void unless you still have the *original* qualifying product.
Why? Well, an upgrade is only 'half' a licence if you like and it's only
validated once you have shown it the qualifying product. Once you have, the
QP's licence makes the upgrade licence whole and the two are then 'locked'
together, and cannot be separated. If you decide to sell, or give away, the
QP you are legally obliged to give away the upgrade as well.

You will need to contact Microsoft for assistance with the installation.
See this article, specifically the part that says all versions of Works
qualify for the upgrade:
