Can I use an external keyboard with a laptop?

When I set up an external keyboard (I do a lot of typing and it would be
easier) the laptop keyboard and the external keyboard stop working correctly.
They do not type the correct letters or numbers that I am typing. Any
suggestions? I have word 2002 (Office XP standard) Thanks!

The version of Office you have has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Generally speaking, all you have to do is to plug a keyboard in.
