Can no longer open a document that I could just open?!

I am using Word 2000 (initially on Win 98, but now on Win XP but same problem)

Get the following error when opening a doc that I could open before

The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive
* Use the File Open dialogue box to locate the document

I know it is a FAQ and appears on the MS Support site but non of the listed causes match my scenario. It just stopped being openable. the doc is just over 8MB - is there a limit on size

Can anyone advise me how I might re-open my document. I've tried 'recover text' but after the first 6 pages which are OK, when it comes to the first inserted photo everything following is garbled characters

I would appreciate any advice
