can no longer open word 2007 files in word 2002

I have been happily converting 2007 files to 2002 files for a long
time. Today, conversion stopped working with an mswrd632.wpc error
message. Googled it and found it was due to a Windows update kb973904.
Uninstalled this as recommended and conversion still didn't work.
Edited the registry as recommended and still not working. Installed
the conversion pack for 2007 converters and get a message that it is
the pre-release version and do I want to check for newer version -
goes round in a circle taking me to the same download and same
message. Re-installed kb973904 - still get the pre-release version of
converter message.

Any ideas?

Tom, I just started having a similar problem. Posted earlier under Major
Word 2007 problem. I tried to remove the update in question as suggested and
found that it did nothing to help, so I reinstalled it. I have not tried the
registry edit because I am reluctant to mess with it, but also because of the
fact that at the same time I have started having trouble opening files on
another older word processing program AND I have discovered that the problem
seems to be related to where the files are located - if I overwite the files
from back up or open from a cd the problem doesn't seem to happen. It is
driving me crazy I never know what to expect. I heard that Microsoft was
ordered last week by a federal judge to stop using a component of Word 2007
in a patent infringement suit (I seem to remember it was a conversion type
function involved) and I wonder if they have done something through automatic
updates and other access they have to my computer relative to the converter
and don't want to announce it to their world. I guess we just stay tuned.
Since you had no luck with the registry edit or trying to get a new
conversion pack, I am going to stay away from it. Maybe time to dowload some
free open office software that can read all my word docs. This is upsetting
because up until now I have had nothing but good to say about Word 2007

This has been escalated with MS. For most users find that the registry
change works fine, but for an increasing number of users, even after the
registry change problems continue.

The problem is a security risk with the filter and patching the leak seems
be causing many problems.
