Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (908531)

For those who have Hewlett Packard's Share to Web Software, there are two
registry patches to choose from (run either one or the other) not both:

Ottmar Freudenberger has made a patch available at:-
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip
(Note this is a Zip file and will need to be extracted. It contains a REG file
which needs to be imported into the registry)
or
Kelly has made a patch available at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line #383 - this is a vbs file and instructions on how to use such files are at
the top of the page.

I am having the same problem. All existing files in PowerPoint and Wor
will not "Save As". I too have recently done a Windows Update. This i
affecting both my internet connected computers.

Clicking "Save" does save the file.

The only way I can get files off either of the laptops, is to burn
CD. This works, and I can open the file on another PC.

I trust Bill is flying home to personally see that this is sorted out.

I will be sending him my bill for lost work and time.

Cheers,

SwanDiv

Thanks so much. Tre bummed about MS doing this and then being so obtuse about
the remedy. Great job Kelly!

Hi there Dilys, if you are not affected by this particular update and it's
installed on your computer and having no problems, then you don't need to do
anything. Some people are affected and many are not affected.

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security
update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

The regedits provided by Ottmar Freudenberger and Kelly were to assist users who
had Hewlett Packard's Share to Web Software and were not confident in mucking
around in the registry. Either one or the other was to be used not both. I gave
a choice.

Others who may have been affected and were not using "Share to Web Software"
were directed towards perhaps a video card issue or a firewall issue.

Some users may have a Kerio Personal Firewall and should read the article about
918165 carefully:

Dilys

Thanks. Our computer is DEFINITELY affected, and I will use one of the
patches. We also have an NVIDIA graphics card, so will keep that in mind.
Thank you for your help!
