Can not clear a print area and reselect new area

My file in Excel 2003 is not allowing me to clear a print area and select a
new print area. When selecting "File" and "Print Area" neither the choices
Select nor clear print area can be selected. Both choices show up as not
available options (dull lettering). I have closed and reopened the files but
nothing happens. Any ideas will be appreciated.

If a cell is open for data entry then set print area will disable.
If worksheet is protected then set print area will disable.
