Hi, when trying to open my data base in access 2003 (was created in access
03) it keeps saying: unrecognized data base format. what can i do? I have no
back up of the file so at this point I am quite frantic... Thanks for any
pointers.

Computer Challenged,

Sounds like the begining of corruption...

http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/corruption/symptoms.htm. I would make a
back-up, make another back-up and then first try importing everything into a
new database. Also, read this article...
http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/corruption/retrievedata.htm. And after all
of that I would finish off with this article...
http://allenbrowne.com/ser-25.html and see if any of those circumstances
apply to you.

First, always work on a copy of the database. Working on the original may
make it impossible for a repair service to fix it.

Decompile your database:
http://www.trigeminal.com/usenet/usenet004.asp

Download a copy of JetComp.exe:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;273956

Try backing up your forms as text with the undocumented SaveAsText
LoadFromText functions:

http://www.datastrat.com/Code/DocDatabase.txt

Also have a look at the Microsoft KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;209137

Then have a look at Tony Toews' Access Corruption FAQ at:

http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/corruptmdbs.htm

for some suggestions. Unfortunately, some corruption cannot be fixed - you
may need to create a new database, import what can be salvaged, and recreate
the rest.

Although it's a paid service, Peter Miller does an outstanding job of saving
corrupt databases. Try this URL:

wow... it sounds to me like you've been bitten by a classic Jet
Corruption bug..

unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't give a shit about jet.. that's why
it still crashes.

move to SQL Server, it's an easier platform and performance and
stability are night and day better
