Can not open doc in Word 2003 but OK in 2002

A Word document was sent with an email message. The
receiver has Office 2003 and when tries to open attachment
gets a message "Word was unable to read this document. It
may be corrupt. etc.". If you try the same steps on Word
2002/Xp it opens without any problem.

If I save the attachment, open Word 2003 with a blank
document, from the menu select File, Open, highlight file,
click on triangle next to Open button and select Open and
Repair, then the document will open with a message box
showing the repairs "Internal Data Integrity (Type 4) 1"
and "Internal Data Integrity (Type 4) 2". Close that
message box and save the document and all is okay.

What is causing the error and how do we overcome it
permanently?

Much depends on whether this is just a one off corruption or if this happens
all the time. XP and 2K3 handle the document recovery procedure differently,
so XP may be doing the document recovery in background as it opens the
document - so it is hard to say. Does this happen consistently?

Most of the time it works. It is just some Word
attachments. There is no indication of repair on Word
2002. I have seen this problem brought up in other forums
but no acceptable solution offered. Suggestions have been
to send document in rtf instead of doc format, and
suggestions that it is the email servers stripping
some "bad" bits.

The user is in recruitment and receives hundreds of
resumes in a week, and is now nervous about upgrading to
Word 2003 if this is going to happen, so we need a better
method of resolving than manually processing each one.

Greetings--
It is generally safer policy to send attachments in compressed archives
(ZIP, RAR, CAB, etc).
Compressed archives are lighter and travel faster. Also servers do not
tamper with them.
Maybe you could make it a rule that people sending resumes should send them
in compressed archives?

I agree with Robert. In this instance, zipping the document before sending
will probably resolve the issue.
