Can not open .xls with office 2007

Anytime I receive a .xls file I have to have somone convert it to .xlsx
before I can open it.

Very odd.

Anyone?????

Quite odd.

Excel 2007 should open files from 2003 and earlier.

What exactly occurs when you try to open an *.xls file?

Error message or ???
