can not save as or create new files

I just installed a VPN. I can access files by going through "my computer".
However, if I try to open a file through a microsoft office program I get
"program not responding". After I open a file I can edit it and save it with
"save" however, I can not "save as". After clicking 'save as' i just get
the hourglass and then finall "program not responding". Also, I can not
create any new files. This is happening with both files I am trying to
access on my hard drive (that worked before the VPN) and the files on the
remote drive I am accessing through the VPN. Files that are in a pdf format
and other programs do not seem to be impacted.

Not sure what a VPN is but I encountered the same problem yesterday.
Its funny because it happened on both my laptop and my desktop. I
didn't install anything new that I can remember, especially not on my
desktop. Please Help!!!
