can not save office2000 files with new name over network

DF2000

My pc is running Win XP. In MS Word and MS Excel (office 2000) I can open
files over network from win98 machines. I can also make changes and save.
However, if I try to save with a new name I get the message:
The folder (filename with network address) isn't accessible. The folder may
be located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password.

I have downloaded all service packs.

I can find the file using windows explorer and rename it over the network.
The problem only seems to occur from my XPpro PC using the MS office
programs - pretty inconvenient through!
Anyone help?

If you installed Windows XP update KB885250 "MS05-011: Vulnerability in
server message block could allow remote code execution", try
uninstalling KB885250 in Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

This file KB885250 is inside SP2 so have no choice to uninstall SP2 to fix my
problem...:-(

There was another thread that suggested reinstalling the patch seems to fix the
problem.

Open Control Panel and Add/Remove and open.

Checkmark the box at "Show Updates"

You will see 885250 listed.

Uninstall then re-install from MS update site.

What updates do you see when you "Show Updates" in Add/Remove?

SP2 removal may take out any updates you have downloaded since SP2 install but
I'm not about to experiment. I am satisfied with SP2 performance.

There were 9 updates on Feb 7th. Did you download those?

KB885250 was one of those 9.

Thanks to all for your input.

I uninstalled the Windows XP update KB885250 and that removed the problem.
However, my PC immediately informed me the Windows XP update KB885250 was
available and when I let it reinstall, the problem returned.

Do you think I should just avoid installing this update (though I think my
pc will be interupting me all day to tell me about it) or is there something
else I should try?

Hello everyone.
I have been going through this thread and followed all instructions an
uninstalled KB885250 but I am stlll having the same problem.

I run WinXP home edition, and this one particular folder which I onc
had shared on a home network now has 1000's of invisible files and som
folders. If I type in the complete path and filename for a file in th
address bar I am able to access the files or folders, but if I do
search for it, even in the command prompt the file can't be found.

Is there maye something else that I may be missing or something els
you can think of? At first I thought I had a virus, but after readin
here I am thinking otherwise. I even tried running several virus scan
but came up with nothing.

I will greatly apprecaite all your help.

Thank
