Can Office be used to do the bookeeping for a consignment store?

I have Office 2000. I recently joined a consignment store and need to help
with the bookkeeping. I have used other programs that will automatically post
to a particular
account simultaneously when an invoice or sale is entered. Each item or
group of items has an ID number that is listed with each seller. So I need
the program to recognize that number when it is sold and marked with a date
of sale on the seller's account.
