Can PowerPoint 2003 play mpg1 files?

Marty.C

I have been trying to insert mpg1 files into a PowerPoint presentation. The
movie does not play when I go into show mode. I get a 'PowerPoint has
encountered a problem' window and it then shuts down. I have tried to do the
same thing in an earlier version of PowerPoint on another computer and it
works OK. I have also loaded additional codecs (K-Lite codec pack) onto my
computer. Any suggestions?

From The Myers Multimedia FAQ by Austin Myers (PowerPoint MVP)
via PPTools:

"Video: (Movies)
QuickTime files (*.mov, or *.qt) created with versions one and two of
QuickTime. (Versions three and four are not supported.)
Audio Video Interleave (*.avi)
Motion Picture Experts Group (*.mpg, *. mpeg, *.m1v, *.mp2, *.mpa, *.mpe)
Microsoft Streaming Format (*.asf, *.asx)
Animated GIF (*.gif) While animated GIFs are not movies, they come close
enough for discussion in this document. Note:
Only PPT2000 and later support animated GIFs
You insert GIFs using Insert, Picture, From File (rather than Insert, Movie,
From File)
As pictures, GIFs are always embedded unless you specifically choose to link
them (unlike other movie formats, which are always linked)

While other, less popular video formats exist, these are the most common and
most likely to be used in PowerPoint. Should you need to use one of the less
popular formats I strongly suggest converting it to an avi or mpg format."

Marty,

powerpoint can play mpeg1 files. Is it a true mpeg1 file or some thing else?

Is the file in
c:\short folder name\?

have you installed quicktime and/or real player, as they sometimes take over
the playing of media, which in turn messes up powerpoints ability to play
media.
