Can PowerPoint play GIF's in slideshow view?

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I've been trying to get any sort of animated images embedded into PowerPoint, and I thought for sure GIF's would be able to play in slideshow view, but it seems frozen. Any ideas?

If you're inserting from Clip Art, pasting, or using Insert> Picture you're
telling PPT that the graphic is to be displayed as a static, flat GIF. If
you want the multi-layer animation of the GIF to be recognized you need to
insert it using Insert> Movie.
