can print images in colour but not coloured background also

Using a colour printer I can print two blue and grey images as required, but
I cannot also change the background colour to yellow. I have ensured that in
Tools/Options the background print box is checked.

Note that "Background printing" has nothing to do with printing a background
that you insert using Format | Background. It refers to printing *in* the
background (while you continue to work in Word). Only Word 2003 and above
allow you to print a background (Tools | Options | Print: Background colors
and images).

For previous versions you need to insert your background color as a
watermark; the only other way to print it is to save the document as a Web
page and print it from a browser with printing of background colors and
images enabled.

If you can compromise a bit, buy coloured paper - you will save a fortune on
printer cartridges
