Can Project send emails using Novell Groupwise?

I am researching my MSc Dissertation and need to know if MS Project 2003 can
send reminder emails to designated respondants via Novell Groupwise 6 instead
of MS Outlook.

Are you asking about Project 2003 Standard and Professional desktop
applications or the Project Server 2003 server application?

If you're talking about the desktop PM application, support for the
Workgroup Tools that sent task assignments, etc, via email that was in
earlier versions has been withdrawn in the current release. It can be
re-activated by following the directions in an article in the MS support
Knowledgebase, article number 818337 and that also discusses the system
requirements. It does require the email system to be fully MAPI compatible
and to the best of my knowledge Groupwise is not. I'm pretty sure the only
system supported besides Exchange is Lotus Notes and even Notes often proves
iffy in practice.

Rick,

If you're talking about Project Server, it will use any SMTP gateway (including Groupwise - we use it right now) that you point it to, as long as that gateway is setup to accept and forward mail from outside sources. This is commonly known as a mail relay and mail administrators typically lock down mail relay so they don't become victims to spammers that hijack their gateway. However, if you talk to your mail admins and tell them what you need to accomplish the can "white list" your project server so mail relay will be allowed.
