Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

hi, I've upgraded my system to mac os X.5 and office 2008. When I try to send&receive to one of my pop accounts, I get the message:"... to rebuild my database."; which I did, but nothing changed. Then I deleted the account and made a new one. Since then I can send, but still the message is popping up with:" rebuild your database..." As far as I can check all the preferences are ok, they work perfect on my Iphone, only my macbook pro has this problem, and only one of my three mailaccounts... what to do? thanks for helping.

Try deleting this preference file in your User's --> Library Preferences:

com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist

Obviously, something is wrong. It could be your language selected or some
other modification.

See Dos and Don'ts for a good install

In case the above link does not work:

Check List to troubleshoot your install

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/install_08.html#checklist>

My suggestion would be to reinstall Office.

1) Drag the Office for Mac folder in the root application folder to the
trash and delete it.

2) Log out/in with Shift key down then insert your DVD. This quits all
startup applications including the hidden ones.

3) Run the installer ( I believe your CD Key will still be stored in memory)
as soon as it finishes the install the Microsoft AutoUpdate will pop up in
the Dock. It's a green circle icon. Select to keep in Dock. Do not do
further updates until you restart.

4) After restarting you will want to log into your account again with the
Shift key down. Select the MAU from the dock and let it install. It will
install the new AutoUpdate 2.1.1. Restart.

5) Same process after restarting log in with Shift key down. Select the MAU
and it will install the 12.1.0 SP1 updater. Restart

6) Same process...shift key down. Run the MAU and it will install 12.1.5.

7) Restart

Original release DVD came with 12.0.0 installed, but later a DVD with 12.1.0
was released. Those with the original DVD will need to use the 12.1.0 SP1
combo updater then the 12.1.5 combo updater. Users with the later release
will only need the 12.1.5 combo updater.

Let me know if you continue to have problems.

Yes, it appears that luklouis is running a Dutch version of Office. Perhaps
the 12.1.5 updater is not yet released for Dutch.

exactly, I'm running a German (deutsch) version of office 08. Try to install the update later, have to buy Xmas presents now. Thanks anyway, and merry Xmas!

does this germanlink mean that I don't need to do a reinstall, and just download the german update?

Do you want German or Dutch? I think you don't need to reinstall, just
download the correct version. Based on the information you posted earlier,
it looks like you're running a Dutch version; the days of the week were in
Dutch, not German.

Most likely you'll have to do the re-install. It's not too time consuming
to try the update. If it fails, delete the receipts for Office2008.

"/Library/Receipts"

This should make sure the AutoUpdater sees all updates that are needed.

the point is: my OSX is a DUTCH version, my office 08 is an update of an older GERMAN office 04. So when a do a version check the result is in DUTCH but the office programm itself runs in GERMAN. Could this be the reason for my problem? Should a change something in the office settings?

So: I reinstalled office 08, could make software updates until 12.1.4, after this update the MAU said there were no more updates available. Then I went to the macdownloadcentre and did a download of the 12.1.5 version. When I launched the install of the update it said "can't install because the programm to install this software is not present"... then I launched entourage to see if the "send & receive" function did it, and no: still the same as it was, for one account I can send but not receive and it says again: restart entourage or rebuild your database.

This sounds like your problem. I'm not exactly sure what you need to change
and unless another MVP can help, it might take a while to get a reply back
from the Microsoft folks.

so today I downloaded the GERMAN version of the 12.5 update, and that installed itself. But when I tried, after the install and restart procedure, to send and receive the one account (vodafone), again it didn't work, again it said, "rebuild your database" or "problems trying to connect to your network server...".

That's progress. Create a new Identity in Entourage and enter the problem
account. Does it work in a new Identity? If yes, then it is your database.
If no, then test in a new User account. Go to System Preferences --> Create
a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast
User Switching. Test Entourage in a new Identity first. If that work, drag
your original Identity to Shared folder so you can test your Identity. Let
me know what you find.

This thread has gotten very long. I might be repeating myself so bear with
me.

1) As long as you can open your Identity you can salvage data. Make a backup
copy in the Finder before rebuilding. How to rebuild:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/rebuild.html>

2) I've seen imported Entourage 2008 database that were corrupted shortly
after and the only way to really fix them is to manually move into a new
Identity. Once you create this new Identity it will be very solid. How to
manually move your data.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/manual_install.html>

If you are still having problem, can you briefly summarize what you have
tried?

Seasonal Greetings!

the continuing story... so first I tried it wiht a new identity: same error 50 and 3260. Then I created a new account and a new identity, same result. In the mean time I created with gmail an IMAP account and push my mail via gmail to entourage, works ok, so maybe we should stop here because I'm not sure we'll find a sollution. Thank you anyway, and all the best.
