Can the "Create Date" in Properties be depended upon?

Does anyone know if you can depend on the "Create Date" in Properties for a
file? I have someone that says they send me a document many months ago, but
when I look at the Create Date in Properties, it shows it was created on
10/30/08. Just want to know before I open a can of worms.

Not really. In some versions of Word, even though the document was saved
many years ago if it is changed (even by putting a space in the document)
and then resaved by clicking on File Save, pressing Ctrl+ S or the save icon
on the menu bar, the creation date is changed to the current computer date
once closed and reopened.

What would need to be asked is if the sender saved the file at all on the
30th or simply emailed it. How you ask the question would possibly give
away the reason for asking the question. If simply emailed, the date of
creation would probably have been on the 30th. Next thing would be if this
file could have been backed up on a network drive, look to see if the file
existed prior to the 30th.
