I wouldn't paint that dark a picture on the technical feasibility of
installing it side-by-side with 2003.
I agree 100% on the cost issue though. People really seem to be blinded
and think they can get Office 2007 for free and I definitely will try to
be offline (similar to JoAnn) around February 1, when the beta version
expires and people post here pissed off at MS, because their free Office
doesn't work anymore...
As for doing a side-by-side install, it works reasonably well (with a
few glitches of course). You need to run a customized setup, make sure
to go through all tabs manually before pressing next and select keep all
previous versions. Notice that if you install Outlook 2007, Outlook 2003
will be uninstalled as no two versions of Outlook can ever be on the
same computer. Will it affect Office 2003 negatively? Maybe. The beta
build before Beta 2 managed to uninstall my Office 2003 speech engine.
Word 2003 always takes ownership of the doc extension whenever it is
opened and the only way to restore this to 2007 is by running office
diagnostics (there is a different way too, but it takes the same 20 mins
to do). Even if you uninstall 2007, you will still have traces on your
computer from it. So to really get completely rid of it, uninstalling
and then doing a system restore prior to the point 2007 was installed is
advisable.
Also, never ever run Office 2003 setup while 2007 is installed. If you
need to run 2003 setup, remove 2007 first.
If you want to have some fun with your computer, go ahead and do it. If
you rather want to have your computer 100% running all the time, don't
do it.

Greatly appreciate yur corroboration. Why oh why do they do this without
advising of the risk? It seems counter-productive and very bad public
relations.

THANK YOU!
I've been telling people that all along, as have several others but some
people are blinded by the cost of the beta. They have blocked out the fact
that betas can wreak havoc on your system and that it will cease to work on
a particular day. And I already know that most people are going to have
EXTREME difficulty going back top their previous versions of Office. It's
not going to be a simple, click, click, uninstall. Ta dum. There will be a
plethora of cuss words let loose into the world that day. (I've already told
people I'm unplugging my computer late in the evening of January 31 and it
will stay unplugged for about a week. I'm gonna hang out at the mall or do
volunteer work if I am not employed at that point.)

Received this reply from a top rated MS Engineer, which is quite scary: "I
don't know what to tell you. You have to be very careful. Basically I
would
only install them if you are willing to reformat your hard drive and
re-install if something goes wrong..Its working fine for me right now." If
there is no going and something goes wrong--then what? Why bother trying?
And any forecasts as to the costs involved--it won't be free, will it?
