Can you apply the built-in slide themes to individual slides?

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) I've just switched over from a PC. I used to be able to apply different built-in slide themes to INDIVIDUAL slides within the same presentation. On my Mac, it will only apply them to the entire presentation. I can't find any way of only applying them to individual slides. Surely there must be a way to do it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Themes are applied to slideshows in their entirety. If you want some
slides to use a different theme, you will have to create a separate
presentation with those slides, and then import them into the main
presentation file using the Insert>Slides From>Other Presentation. In
the Slide Finder window that pops up, make sure the option "Keep design
from original slides" is checked (you will only see the Slide Finder if
you choose "Select slides to insert" when you are asked to select a
file; do this, as the theme won't make it across if you simply insert
the entire presentation file without going through the Slide Finder
dialogue).
