can you create a template will open in all versions of word

I am trying to create a template of a document that can be opened in any
version of word and not loose it's formatting, is this possible? Or is there
a format to save the document that will allow it to open in any version of
word without loosing it's macros and formatting? Any help or advise would be
greatly appreciated.

Generally speaking, you can save something in rtf format and keep most or
all formatting. You will lose macros. If the versions of Word you are
interested in are Word 97 and later, you can save in Word 97 format. Word's
file structure has remained constant since Word 97 but features added later
are not understood by earlier versions. The prime example is nested tables.
See the nested tables tutorial at http://addbalance.com/word/download.htm.
