Can you use Microsoft 98 Special Edition on a new Imac

I finally broke down and parted with my old Blueberry 333 iMac and
bought the new iMac. However when I tried to install my Microsoft
Word 98 Special Edition (which I find more than adequate for my needs)
into the new machine, I received an error message that the new
operating system didn't support it. It does have a 30 day trial of
the new Microsoft Office for Mac but I will need to purchase it when
the trial is up. I already have software for Microsoft Office 2001
Powerpoint and Excel and i just used the Word 98 seperately with no
problem. Is there some way to install the Word 98 on the new system?
After all, Word 98 Special Edition was made for iMac and I did pay
good money for it.

Thanks. I have worked with a number of Microsoft MVP's in my career
and it is nice to have one help me on the personal side too.

No version of Office prior to Office X will run on your system... they were
written for OS 9. Further, you iMac is an Intel-based unit which doesn't
support Classic, so you can't go that way either. However, since you do have
a prior version you don't have to re-purchase at full retail price. You are
eligible to purchase the upgrade package at a reduced rate.

Just make sure that if you *do* use the Test Drive that you uninstall it
using the Remove Office utility in the MS Office folder *before* installing
the live version - don't just drag stuff to the Trash. Otherwise you'll have
problems. Also, you'll need your O2001 install disk handy when you do
install the upgrade. You'll be prompted for verification - just pop the disk
in the drive & point the installer to it to complete the installation.
