Cannot access data

Eric

When I first boot up my Mac, Entourage takes forever to open. When it
does I get the "Entourage cannot access your data..." error message
followed by "Do you want to quit Microsoft Messenger....". I cancel
the message and reopen Entourage and it works perfectly. I have
rebuilt the database successfully, but the error message still comes
on every time I start the computer? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you started with the basic troubleshooting steps such as verifying
permissions and verifying your disk using Disk Utility?

Do you use multiple identities within Entourage?

To troubleshoot errors like this you need to determine where the problem is
located. Is it your Identity, your User's folder, the base OS files or the
Office install. Troubleshooting Basics
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/basics.html>

It appears you are running Leopard "Intel Mac OS X 10.5" You should update!
Usually the first release is buggy and keeping current with updates is
critical.

Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update
(For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )

Let me know what you find.

Hi Diane, I am running v 10.5.5 already.

Hmmm, wonder why Apple doesn't include the full version.

It never hurts to apply a combo. You still need to do the basic
troubleshooting steps mentioned.
I use only one identity and I am on an
Exchange Server.

I would create a new Identity in Entourage rather than trying to rebuild.
Since this is an Exchange account, check out Bill's blog post:

"Optimize Entourage to better work with Exchange"

Hi Eric!

That helps to know.

Because your mail should still be on the server then I'd suggest using
Entourage menu --> Switch Identity to create a new identity. Set up your
account again and let your mail sync.

If the problem persists then it's more likely an issue between your
computer and your Exchange server (your network or your Exchange account).

If it goes away then we know the problem is with your Entourage
identity. You can continue using this new identity and many of your
settings (rules and signatures) can be copied from your old identity to
your new one. Post back if you need help with this.

Hope this helps!

Can actually drag over the individual files for Rules and Signatures from
the other Identity. You will have to reset all of your folder destinations,
but that's much easier than starting from scratch.

I suggest taking screenshots of rules as backups.

Bill, thanks for the question.  I use only one identity and I am on an

Thanks Bill and Diana for your help. After trying everything (and
nothing worked) I finally took the time to build a new Identity and
that seems to have solved the problem--at least temporarily. I do
have one quick question, however: when I look in my Microsoft User
Data file, I find, in addition to my new Identity, the old Identity
and one from Office 2004 (I am using Office 2008). Can I delete these
two other Identities?

Thanks again for all your help.

Yes, if you are satisfied that you have all the info you want moved out of
them.
