cannot assign a character to alt+d

John K.

I do work in linguistics and have been assigning various characters to
shortcut keys. I haven't had a problem until I try to assign a character to
ALT+D. All the other shortcuts I made work fine. I've tried assigning
different characters to ALT+D but none of them will appear in the document.
Is there another feature that uses ALT+D and overrides my assignment? I've
even checked under TOOLS|CUSTOMIZE|KEYBOARD to verify that the character is
assigned to the ALT+D key.
For now, I have assigned the character to ALT+R but since it is similar in
shape to a 'd' I would prefer to use ALT+D. Any suggestions?

Thanks
John K.

Thanks Carol. That's a neat feature that I didn't know about. I tried it
and it showed that ALT+D is assigned to the character that I wanted but
still, nothing happens when I use ALT+D in my document. It's not the
character, since I can assign it to another key stroke, but any other
character I try to assign to Alt+D doen't appear. It is the ALT+D sequence
which isn't working.
More info:
I have Endnote but I don't see that it uses ALT+D
I am using the Gentium font for my characters

I fixed it! I poked around a little more in Tools|Options|General and
unchecked the 'Help for Wordperfect users' and now ALT+D works! (I used to
use Wordperfect so I probably checked this box when I first got Word).
Thanks for help!
John
