cannot center text, locked in align left mode?

This is odd, not sure if it has ever happened, but my text is locked in "align left" mode. When the cell is highlighted the center alignment boxes are highlighted both vertically and horizontally. When I go into Format Cells, Alignment, it shows they are Horizontal and Vertical centered. But....they are clearly aligned left in the column. Is something locked I don't see? All are in the General category under Format Cells, Number.
