Cannot convert docx because 8GB RAM and 750 GB disk space not enough

Really!

I can't open a docx Word file because "There is not enough memory or
disk space to convert this document."

Seriously!?! For a 37kb file? Not enough memory?

27' iMac: 8 GB RAM (only 30 percent being used) and 796 GB of hard
drive space isn't enough to convert a little Word document?

What system configuration would I need to convert this Word document? I
have a feeling that twice as much of both still wouldn't do it. It is a
file DLed from MS regarding styles in the 2011 version.

I used to love Word. Loved it. Have to say, love is diminishing with
every incarnation.

I wanted to find out if MS has improved upon that tiny little Styles
menu in all other versions of Word. It's a lovely, huge, sizable
palette in the Windows version. Why would a developer feel that this is
good in one platform but not in the other? I was told that Mac users
don't work that way. Really?

I'm a technical editor and writer with hours of time on both Windows
and Mac versions of Office. Recently edited/formatted the manuals for
the 2010 Olympic Games on my Mac. Formatting documents is much of what
I do. That tiny paragraph styles palette in Mac is a pain when dealing
with move than five or six styles.

My suspicion is that the legacy code of Office is, in some cases, older
than the developers working on it. It's an old can of worms that MS
doesn't want to change.

MS is in the slow process of abandoning the Mac platform. Adobe did it
with FrameMaker. The Windows world would rejoice if Macs went away.
Suppose we could all go back to the lovely green screen and command
line the DOS users used to rave about. Mouse? What would you use a
mouse for?

Doesn't it embarrass anyone at MS that the Mac version of PowerPoint
chokes on PowerPoint files from Windows? The fix: use one of the many
free suites that opens them without difficulty. Does that matter to
anyone at MS? Indifference will be met with indifference in time. If
the owners don't care, why should the users.

Rant over, I feel better. Cheers to all.
