cannot cut, copy and paste in word icons are gray

I am unable to cut, copy and paste uning the icons or right clicking in Word
2003, Excel works fine.

It is almost certainly the action of an incompatible or badly written third
party add-in. Start Word in Safe Mode by holding down the control key whilst
launching Word. This bypasses all add-ins, templates, macros opening Word in
its default install condition. Are you able to copy/paste now?
