Cannot Delete Msg from Inbox

I am using OUTLOOK EXPRESS 6.
If I select a message from the Inbox and click DELETE, the
message is moved to the DELETED ITEMS folder but stays in
the INBOX.
If I now select the message from the DELETED ITEMS folder
and click DELETE, it is deleted from the Deleted Items
folder.
Can someone help ? Have I change something inadvertently
