cannot delete outdated contacts from autocomplete

I know one is supposed to be able to highlite the contact in the drop
down box and hit delete to permanently get rid of it but that does
nothing. I don't see the old contact in the contacts view but when I
start typing a name and several come up, the old ones somehow appear.
How can I really get rid of them?

It works.
Are you doing it correctly? These Contacts do not exist in your Contacts
Folder. Remove individual addresses from the autocompletion cache by
highlighting the entry when presented in the suggested names list (use your
arrow key to migrate to the entry) and then hitting your Delete key before
you tab out of the field. To clear the entire cache, follow the instructions
here:
