cannot download updates for office mac 2004 student/teacher edition

Hello,

I have not been able to download office updates for my 2004 version of
Office Mac student/teacher since 2005/2006 at home. I first had it on
my iBook G4 and received updates no problem until late 2005 early
2006. Then I could only get the updates when I used the open internet
connection at the Apple store or another open connection not in my
house. When I bought my new iMac G5 and installed the second of three
licenses on this computer, I could not get updates for this one
either. However, my friend, who is using the third license, had no
problem getting the updates for his Macbook Pro where he lives. I
have tried going to the Microsoft website to manually download the
updates, but Safari says it cannot find the webpage
"download.microsoft.com" in the error message. Please help.

Well, the Mac Office updates are at

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

but since Safari says it can't find downloads.microsoft.com (which
redirects to www.microsoft.com/downloads/Search.aspx) you've got a
problem somewhere between your machine and your isp.

Are you running firewall or nanny software that would block
microsoft.com? Do you have a hosts file that redirects server requests?

If Comcast is the ISP provider they are having a problem with the DNS
servers. The fix is to go to the TCP/IP and enter 68.87.64.196 then on the
next line type 68.87.66.196. Click apply and go back to the Microsoft
Mactopia download page and get the update.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and my response has absolutely nothing
to do with the problem you are having but....
Have you really read your student teacher license? All users of the license
must reside in the same household. As i interpret the license, "friends"
living someplace else must purchase their own Office license.

I have been unable to download updates for MS Office as well...
probably for a year or more.
I don't use it often enough that I'm losing sleep over it... but it
would be nice to be current.

I'm using Charter Communications as my ISP, and I've tried to get to
the dowload via MS Office's auto update, Safari and Firefox... any
suggestions would be appreciated...

Hmmm... I suspect the problem is outside your computer. Open Terminal, and
Ping 144.135.8.169. If you do not get a reply, something is blocking the
server, yell at Charter Support until they open the port for you :)

cheers

Have you talked to Charter? Did you try the fix for Comcast? The fix is to
go to the TCP/IP and enter 68.87.64.196 then on the next line type
68.87.66.196.

Install tcpflow and see what is failing when you try to download.
