Cannot Format Data in Cell

K

Karen

What could be happening to a cell when this happens?
It's a file someone else created in Excel. I attempted to
center the data in the cell and I can't do that - I can't
even changed the font. I can't figure out what's
happening. There is no protection at all on the cells or
workbook.

HELP!

Hi Karen

are you trying the centering & bolding on the same piece of text ... check
that you've actually got the text selected by checking as to what appears in
the formula bar - sometimes text isn't where it appears to be ....
if that's not the problem - can you format ANY cell in the worksheet?
can you format cells in a new worksheet?
what version of excel are you using?

Hello and thank you for your time - I'm choosing the
correct cell. I have seen this happen before when I'm
trying to change someone else's workbook. I have no idea
what they do to it. I can format some cells and some I
cannot. I can format cells in a new worksheet - I'm
using Word 2003

Thank you

I've seen this happen if the worksheet was originally
created in Quattro Pro, then converted to Excel. The
workaround is to format a cell that is clear outside of
the original file area, then use the paintbrush to copy
the format to the cell in question.
Hope this helps,

word or excel???

if word
try
microsoft.public.word.newusers

other option is to format another cell and then use the format painter (big
yellow paint brush on the standard toolbar) to copy the formatting from the
cell you've just formatted to the one where you want it.
