cannot get certain files and folders to open in xcel and word

When I try to open certain folders and files-all I get is a series of
letters, symbols, and numbers with a very limited text that can be read-and
that is scattered.
In Word I get only square boxes with limited letters.
What am I doing wrong or how can I correct this?

You are a bit sparse with your question. How are you opening
files, and what is their extension.

At face value, I can't understand why a same file would
be read differently in one folder compared to another
if it is self contained.

Most likely you opened an Excel file in MS Word and saved it,m
you could have destroyed by using Notepad and then saving it
for that matter. Probably someone was looking for something
and did the same thing to each file that they saw in that directory.

It loosks like you are opening binary or executable files. Some exttensions
that produce this data is .exe, .dll, .bin, .com. They are not meant to be
read.

The solution: don't try to read these files.
