Cannot get into database due to error message

When I try to open my database with or without the Shift key held down, I get
an error message that reads 'AOIndex is not an index in this table'
I am presented with an OK button and a help button. The help button displays
a blank help page with no options other than to close it. The OK button just
leaves me with the Access Window with File New or File Open. I have tried
Compact and Repair but the error message just appears again.
I am running Access 2000. Has anyone seen this before and is there a way out
of it ?

I have a backup, so I have not lost anything. Thanks for your response, I
will try Jetcomp later just to see if it works
