This sounds like a typical movie type of problem. Playing a movie reliably
in PowerPoint is complicated. there are many issues including codecs, MCI
settings, and the type of link (all movies are linked, none are ever
embedded).
There are two solutions ...
For the do it yourself type of person, you can learn about PowerPoint and
multimedia, find the codecs, adjust the settings and whatnot. If you are
this type of person then a great place to start is:

If you want a simpler solution, I strongly recommend trying PCF. It does
all this stuff for you and almost always leaves you with a movie that will
play without worry.
