cannot get notification envelope or sound when new mail arrives

having troubles not getting any notifications when new mail arrives. i have
gone into the settings and everything seems fine, all the boxes are all
checked. i still cant work out why i dont get a sound or an envelope when i
get new mail.
does anyone know how i could fix this??

Are these messages going into your primary Inbox? What type of account are
we talking about here?

Yes all my messages are going directly to me Inbox. iam on dial up account
with bigpond which was fine when i was using office xp. all the settings look
good, whats seems strange is when i send myself an email, i actually get a
sound and an envelope showing on my task bar and its fine after that. the
monent i close outlook and open it again at a later stage to check mail, i
still get the mail no problems but no sound and envelope notification.
